These writings are my field notes from a life spent learning self-reliance. They grow out of the daily work of building Living Ground in the mountains of Ecuador, where soil, microbes, gardens, food, and community are not ideas but lived practice. Some posts explore the living soil beneath our feet and the microbial worlds that support plants, food, and human health. Others wander into herbs, fermentation, garden experiments, mistakes, and small discoveries that appear along the way. Many are reflections on the work of trying to live closer to the rhythms of land and life. Self-reliance, as I have come to understand it, is not about standing alone. It is about remembering our place inside living systems that connect soil, plants, microbes, animals, and people. This space is a collection of field notes. A record of the work, the questions, the failures, and the quiet successes that come from building something real with the earth, and perhaps a small window into the life behind it.
